Monte Fino 85 ecHo: Long Haul Light

The Monte Fino 85 ecHo explorer is meant to go the distance, but leave smaller footprints.

MonteFino85ecHo-CreditJeffBrown-1There was a time when asking a yacht broker how much a boat cost to run solicited the reply, “If you have to ask, you can’t afford to buy it.” Today, however, the question may suggest a prospective client is concerned about general operational efficiency and the yacht’s impact on the environment.

Yachtbuilders are adapting to this reality, which is why, in the planning stages of the new Monte Fino 85 ecHo, fuel frugality was put at the very top of the spec list. The model designation derives from the prefix “eco,” with the capital “H” incorporated because the yacht’s designer, Rob Humphreys, wanted to leave his mark on the project.

Conceived to operate with maximum efficiency and exceptional fuel economy, the 85 ecHo has a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. In keeping with the builder’s environmentally responsible philosophy, she is equipped with resource-efficient, low-emissions technology that filters the exhaust. Her innovative hull shape with its integrated propeller tunnels and bulbous bow (an unusual feature in a yacht of this length) helps achieve a fuel-consumption figure that, with each engine turning 1350 rpm, produces a 10-knot speed with a burn of less than six gallons an hour. Humphreys has given her the chunky good looks of an explorer yacht. Her high-freeboard and patrol-boat-style bridge deliberately reflect his desire to give her offshore capabilities.

Like all Monte Fino yachts, she is built by Kha Shing Enterprises in Taiwan, the same company that builds the Hargrave line. With more than 30 years of building experience, the yard has delivered more than a thousand yachts to customers all over the globe. The 85 is the first model in the ecHo range. She is a highly capable, long-distance yacht that is equally at home in Fort Lauderdale or crossing the Pacific.

MonteFino85ecHo-CreditJeffBrown-5Her specification on delivery was uncompromising. Examples include stabilizers fitted as standard. Esthec composite decking was selected as an environmentally friendly alternative to hardwood, and the effect is visually pleasing and highly effective. Interestingly, and by way of contrast, the treads of the stairs leading from one deck to another are finished in real-deal teak.

Spacious interiors designed by the Australia-based Giorgia Drudi provide plenty of relaxation space for up to eight guests, plus accommodations for four crew. Comfortable U-shape sofas in the salon are finished in a soft gray-brown fabric.  The TV rises out of the cabinet opposite.

The dining area, with its glass, wood and leather table, seats eight. The space has a casual feel about it, but would rise to the occasion should there be a call for more formal inside dining. There are narrow storage cabinets below the windows to port and starboard, and a client might want to assess their dimensions before buying very large dinner plates. The windowless galley is a compact, but well-laid-out working space that suggests many of the family meals might be taken ashore, leaving this space to cope with breakfasts and light lunches. It is well equipped, though, featuring a Corian work surface, electric stove, larder-style refrigerator-freezer and a double sink. Natural light and easy access to the side deck can be obtained by leaving the door to the galley open.

A single door from the wheelhouse gives access to the side deck and from there to the foredeck and its attendant electric windlasses, each handling 165-pound anchors and 600 feet of chain. The foredeck is recreation-friendly. It has two chill boxes, plenty of seating, which, with the drop-down table and an infill, converts to make a sprawling sunbed.

MonteFino85ecHo-CreditJeffBrown-12The expansive sundeck is one of the yacht’s biggest selling points. Flybridge controls are right forward and offer, by far, the best place to drive the yacht and carry out berthing maneuvers. An electric crane capable of lifting 1,750 pounds will accommodate a substantial tender on the sundeck, and if you’re careful in getting the sizes right, maybe even a PWC alongside it. The bar area has stools, a grill, an icemaker and a refrigerator. It is the place to hang out when the sun is at its zenith.

The guest and crew accommodations are all on the lower deck. Positioned forward is a spacious VIP suite with decorative touches worthy of a master stateroom. Here, as elsewhere, the bathrooms are well appointed and feature large marble-backed shower stalls and marble vanities. Either granite or Corian can be substituted for the marble.

Monte Fino yachts are sold and serviced in the U.S. by Hargrave Yachts and its sister company, Colonial Yachts. Monte Finos generally compete on price with the likes of Cheoy Lee, Johnson and Horizon. With Kha Shing making a major push introducing new models for Europe, the new generation of Monte Fino yachts will arrive in the U.S. at the beginning of 2014. The 85 ecHo is currently available exclusively through Monte Fino Europe.

For owners not prepared to wait three or more years for a fully custom discovery vessel, the new Monte Fino 85 ecHo offers substantial flexibility with interior fit-out, great energy efficiency, a tip of the hat to the environment and shorter delivery times.
